We all know the weather in England can be, well... British. However, giving yourself something to look forward to can put your mind at rest, so why not cruise the Caribbean with where sun, sea and white sand beaches are almost certainly guaranteed?
P&O Cruises have their two largest and most luxurious ships - Azura and Ventura - based in the Caribbean from November through to March to offer some of the best winter sun you've ever experienced. You can opt for one of the transatlantic cruises, or fly to the first destination of Barbados and begin your holiday right away. The flights are provided by Thomas Cook and Thomson, giving you a peaceful and easy start to your holiday. What's more, you can fly from a range of airports up-and-down the UK from locations including London, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow. Once you have landed into Barbados, you will be taken on a short transfer to the ship, where you will simply check in and find your luggage in your cabin.
So, welcome to the Caribbean! The culture here is one of the friendliest around, and the infectious laid-back lifestyle will really get you in the holiday mood. Here you can safely explore the many islands that P&O Cruises will take you on a two week sun-kissed cruise.
As mentioned, we join in Barbados. With its bustling town and enigmatic lifestyle it's easy to see why these islands are seen as paradise. With a refreshing cocktail in hand, lounging up on deck next to the pool, you will experience the famous P&O Cruises Great British sail-away party! With music pumping and the sun beaming, you will have the time of your life as you start your onward journey to the beautiful islands, including Grenada, Antigua, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Dominica, St. Kitts, Grand Turk, St. Maarten, Tortola, Curacao and Bonaire, before returning to Barbados where you will start you home-bound journey. On the first evening, you can enjoy a barbecue up on deck, or dine your allocated restaurant with your preferred dining time. Here are just some of the things that you will see and can do on some of the most enjoyed islands from our itinerary...
The best island for the truly British visitor. With its English roots, afternoon tea is a ritual even for the locals, so starting a holiday home from home can only be comforting to us Brits. The island offers complete variety of the modern day city, alongside the more rural parts of the island where you can see sugar cane fields as you drive past on your chosen shore excursions. Agriculture is still a large part of the way of life for the Bajuns, with plantation houses and rum distilleries, the famous drink for the Caribbean. However, if you are more the modern day shopper, there are the boutiques of Pelican Village, just two blocks away from where the ship is docked, so whatever you fancy, there is plenty to see and do!
The Royal Navy has a presence on this island, with Nelson’s Dockyard and the grounds of Shirley Heights showing remainders of a working Georgian harbour. However, the island has forsaken the agricultural heritage for a more modern day, tourist appeal. Being within easy walking distance, you can enjoy a day to yourselves and explore as you wish, or take a tour with ourselves to delve deeper into the island.
This action filled island boasts a diver’s paradise, with amazing snorkelling and scuba diving, an experience like never before. Also on offer are other exciting activities to partake in, including windsurfing and kayaking for the more active guest or bird watching and fishing for the nature lover. The island also offers a cultural affair, with the cruise market place just walking distance away from the pier of Wilhelmina Square, offering native foods, handmade items and original art. Also known for the conserve of flamingos, Goto Meer, is a popular for the timid pink birds.
The island is mainly known for its Political history with the US troops; however hurricane Ivan has had a lasting effect on St George’s from 2004. Whilst exploring the beaches, rainforests or mountains, you will see the island coming alive after being refurbished and more colourful than ever before. Known as the ‘Isle of Spice’, the nutmeg trees are all around, along with ginger, cinnamon, mace and turmeric found along the markets. Or maybe seeing the cheeky Mona monkeys are more your thing, at the Grand Etang National Park! Whatever you choose to do, the history of the island will surround you, with the culture-filled ambience.
Known as the ‘Nature Island’, with its untamed rainforest, waterfalls and bubbling hot springs, Dominica is the place to be to see Mother Nature in all her glory. Even though the tourist population can be high, it has stuck to its roots and has no large hotel chains and still depends on its banana trade. The old market also brings homemade trades and is great for original art and crafts.
The most colourful island of all, with colourful birds and butterflies and the green Vervet monkey, among the tropical rainforests that surround the Mount Liamuiga. The island also accommodates white houses from the Colonial era, just a short walk from the port. With St Kitts unique look of historical buildings, alongside new modern day boutiques and cafes, there is so much to explore and learn about the history of the island. Also, with the scenic railway, you can see a variety of things, including the sugar cane train tracks, mountains and greenery and spectacular views of the sea, where you may even see the ship!
